Diners Are Pulling Back On Tips

Tip fatigue is setting in, and a growing share of diners are tipping less often and less generously, especially at counter-service spots.

  • 35% of consumers say they have cut how often or how much they tip at restaurants in 2026.
  • 42% say they would feel comfortable skipping tips on some services.
  • The share tipping 20% or more fell from 45% in September 2025 to 41% this year.

Rising prices and prompt-screen fatigue are behind the shift. Tipping on takeout orders has slid to 62% in 2026 from 78% in 2022, and the pullback is sharpest at coffeehouses and limited-service spots.

Seller angle: Advertisers can capitalize on this trend by helping restaurants, cafes, and service businesses promote transparent all-in pricing, loyalty rewards, and quality experiences that keep guests happy without leaning on the tip screen.

Conversation starter: “About 35% of diners are tipping less this year, and prompt-screen fatigue is real. How is your pricing keeping customers comfortable?”
