Students Prefer Cheaper Online Programs

For the first time, the number of students engaged entirely in online higher education in the U.S. is projected to surpass those in traditional in-person programs. Despite expectations for cost reductions, 83% of online programs are priced the same as or higher than their in-person counterparts, with about 80% of Americans believing that online education should be less expensive. The average cost for online courses is $341 per credit in public universities, slightly exceeding the $325 per credit for traditional classes. This paradox arises as universities leverage online programs to generate revenue, funding other institutional expenses, and investing heavily in marketing. As a result, while the demand for online education grows, it continues to face scrutiny regarding its affordability and relative effectiveness, as online students generally experience lower success rates. Advertisers can leverage the increasing reliance on online education by promoting related services and products that support remote learners.
