Subscription fatigue is becoming a measurable budget issue for U.S. consumers. A Bango survey reported by AOL found the average American has 5.2 subscriptions and spends about $69 per month, or roughly $830 per year. Nearly one-quarter of consumers said they spend more than they can afford on subscriptions, and the pressure is more pronounced among Gen Z, where 41% reported spending beyond what they can afford. The findings show that subscription brands are competing not only against direct rivals, but against every recurring charge in a consumer’s monthly budget. Advertisers should emphasize utility, flexibility, usage, bundling and cost control to stay off cancellation lists. Lower-cost tiers and clear value messaging can also help reach younger consumers who are already overextended. Advertisers in the subscription services space should consider campaigns that prove ongoing value and make subscription spending feel easier to justify.
